Project 2 | Bearability

Resilience has been described as an important constituent of a neoliberal subjectivity. Applied to areas like ecological sustainability, childhood development, and urban planning, resilience involves the attempt to produce systems that would flourish under adversity through the anticipation of crisis-filled future. This project examines this internalization of “resilience-thinking” – manifested as bearability – in the aesthetics, design, and use of digital technologies. Resilience, I offer, is tied to the subject’s ability to bear, and this logic of bearing is embedded in the ways technologies are envisioned.
